Setting Up the Query

The first window displayed by the Query Wizard enables you to set up a query and provide optional information.

To Set Up a New Query:

1.

Click the New button.

2.

Enter a Name and Description.

3.

Select a Style from the dropdown list. Select Summary if you want only summary totals shown, not detail lines. Select Standard if you want all detail lines shown, plus totals as defined on the window for grouping elements.

4.

Optionally, select a value from the Copy From dropdown list if you want to make use of an existing query.

5.

Optionally, click on the checkboxes for Ask at Execution, Public Query, and Case-Sensitive.

6.

Click the Next button.

Note: If you are modifying an existing query, you can click on the Columns, Group, Sort, or Criteria buttons to jump directly to the element you want to modify. You can click the Finish button from any query page if you do not want to view the query screens in between.

Valid Query Indicator

The displayed list of Existing Queries includes a checkbox that indicates if the particular query has a Valid status. An empty checkbox indicates that the query is invalid and needs attention before it can be executed. This situation can be encountered if, between releases of TabWare, there is a database change that conflicts with elements used by the query or if a query is created by combining data from two or more unrelated tables.

Ask at Execution

Select this checkbox if you want the system to prompt you for selection criteria when you run this query.

Make This a Public Query

This option only displays if you have been authorized as a user who defines public queries. When you click the checkbox, the new or selected query becomes available to the selected user group.

Make This Query Case-Sensitive

By default, queries are case-insensitive (returning matching data whether in upper, lower, or mixed cases). Select the Sensitive or Mixed radio button to make your query case-sensitive. A query that is case-sensitive is typically faster than a case-insensitive query.
